Our Supreme Variety Collection includes two varieties that were developed by universities for improved production and a higher percentage of top-grade sweet potatoes per hill. Both of these varieties are quickly gaining popularity over some of the older varieties that have been favorites of gardeners for decades. If you want high yields and beautiful sweet potatoes, this collection is for you!
The Supreme Variety Collection Includes:
Covington Sweet Potato Plants
Covington is an improved sweet potato developed by NC State University. It produces large bunches of the uniform, beautiful sweet potatoes on each plant. This is a very popular variety for market farmers because it yields significantly more high-grade sweet potatoes than other varieties.
Orleans Sweet Potato Plants
Orleans is a newer sweet potato variety developed by Louisiana State University. It was created as an improvement to Beauregard and produces abundant yields of consistently-sized sweet potatoes in each hill. They include the same disease-resistance found in Beauregard sweet potatoes, but are sweeter and have a higher eating quality.
Growing the Supreme Variety Collection:
Covington and Orleans sweet potato plants will produce long trailing vines and should be given plenty of space to roam in your backyard garden. We recommend planting both of these varieties on a 4' row spacing so they have plenty of room to crawl. If growing conditions are ideal, these varieties can yield 1 lb or more of sweet potatoes per row foot of garden.
Sweet potato plants prefer warmer soils, so they should not be planted until the soil has sufficient warmed in spring or early summer. We suggest a 10-12" plant spacing along the row for best results. Consistent irrigation throughout the growth cycle will result in a more bountiful harvest and more #1 grade sweet potatoes.
